SmartStay - the health insurance plan for non-residents

Your health is the most important asset you have. But as non-residents of New Zealand, you’re probably not covered by our public health system if you get sick.

That's why we have a SmartStay health insurance plan especially for you. SmartStay covers you for just about every aspect of your health, including both urgent and non-urgent treatments. And you can upgrade to SmartStay Plus for extra cover for specialist and diagnostic consultations. What's more, there's no time limit for being covered by SmartStay. As long as you're in New Zealand, you're covered.

Here’s just an example of some of the benefits you get with SmartStay:

  • General and oral surgery of up to $150,000 a claim, including accommodation and physiotherapy in a private hospital, and surgeons' and anaesthetists' fees.
  • Non-surgical hospital care of up to $65,000 a year, for instance non-surgical cancer treatment (up to $25,000 per course), and treatment for asthma and diabetes.
  • Major diagnostic procedures such as MRI and CT scans and angiograms.
  • Specialist and diagnostic consultations before and after hospitalisation.
  • Cover for minor surgery, travel and accommodation, physiotherapy, home nursing, speech therapy and much more...

You choose how much your excess will be - from $0 to $4000 - so you're in total control. The greater the excess the lower the premium. Plus, there's no stand-down so you're covered from day one.

Extra assurance with SmartStay Plus

You can protect your health even further with SmartStay Plus, which provides extra cover for specialist and diagnostic consultations.

SmartStay Plus covers you for up to $4000 a year for the costs of visiting a registered specialist and diagnostic tests referred by registered medical practitioners or registered specialists. There’s no excess to pay for claims - and you’re covered from day one.
